Booze Creek Bioretention Project

Fall 2009

Stormwater runoff into the Booze Creek tributary of Cabin John has been reduced a bit by the construction this fall of a "bioretention" garden by the county in Greenwich Park, near the corner of Huntington Pkwy. and Old Georgetown Rd. FOCJCW supporter Steve Dryden, who lives near the park, noticed that there was a large storm sewer intake in the corner of the park receiving uncontrolled runoff, and suggested to the county that the approve a volunteer project to build a rain garden there to divert some of the flow. Instead, Andy Franks of Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, took the ball and ran with it, arranging for construction of the much larger bioretention area. That's the technical name for a deeply-dug rain garden with perforated underdrain pipes that take whatever water soaks through several feat of absorbent soil mix After workers from Highway and Safety Services finished digging and putting the new soil in, volunteers planted several dozen water-tolerant plants provided by the county Rainscapes program. The storm drain intake was elevated so that more water would pond in the garden and be absorned by the soil. Photos show the garden area before, during, and after construction and planting.
